FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa.– More than 30 members of the Pennsylvania National Guard, organized in several teams, traveled to Europe this month to support the Trident Juncture 2015 exercise, NATO’s largest training exercise in a decade.

Trident Juncture 2015 is a NATO military exercise involving 36,000 troops from more than 30 nations training together across Europe. Both the Pennsylvania Army and Air National Guard assisted in all phases of the exercise from the tabletop planning portion to the live exercise.

Soldiers with the 28th Infantry Division traveled to Stavanger, Norway, and supported the land component command by integrating with their Spanish and Portuguese allies.

“Soldiers with the 28th Infantry Division provided a staff to integrate with their team.” said Lt. Col. James Fluck, a staff officer with the 28th Infantry Division. “We made a lot of friends within the multinational division and had some excellent exchanges of information. It was a very successful exercise.”

In addition to the 28th Infantry Division Soldiers, Airmen with the Pennsylvania Air National Guard’s 148th Air Support Operations Squadron, 193rd Special Operations Wing, based out of Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa., were in Norway as well and provided an air liaison officer to advise the ground commanders on the effective use of close air support.

Other members of the Pennsylvania National Guard traveled to Spain and supported a tactical operations center and acted as liaison officers. More than 15 members of the 213th Regional Support Group assisted allies in operating a tactical center, gathering and processing information for U.S. Army Europe. Two Soldiers with the 28th Infantry Division also acted as liaisons between the 28th Infantry Division and the Land Component Command of NATO Headquarters.

“This exercise was a great experience for all the Soldiers involved,” said Maj. Craig Lloyd the team leader for the 213th Regional Support Group team. “Working with our NATO allies and U.S. Army Europe personnel is an excellent way to enhance our interoperability at both the unit and strategic levels.”

The exercise is set to wrap up Nov. 6.
