OKINAWA, Japan - Students from Kubasaki High School and Kadena High School attended the Combined Okinawa School District College Fair Nov. 5 at the Kubasaki High School Gymnasium aboard Camp Foster.

The college fair provided students with a consolidated location to get information to aid them in deciding which college to attend.

Most Status of Forces Agreement personnel on Okinawa do not have the opportunity to tour colleges the way high school students in the U.S. do, according to David W. Young, the Kubasaki High School Counselor.

“We try to get members of our community who have gone to college to come in and talk about their college experience, because they will talk about college from a student perspective,” said Young, a Boone, North Carolina, native.

By attending the college fair, the students are able to have all their college questions answered in person instead of looking for information on the internet, according to Young.

“Many colleges want people to go online to get information now,” said Young. “College fairs are successful because students like to come here and pick up print material, take it back home, and look at it at their leisure.”

Along with being able to research college opportunities, the students also were able to take part in a Free Application for Federal Student Aid presentation.

“Another thing that we were doing here tonight is the presentation to explain the FAFSA process”, said Young. “Any student who goes to college, if they want any financial aid at all, they have to fill out the FAFSA form.”

The college fair night and FAFSA presentation is an annual event and alternates locations between Kubasaki High School Gymnasium and the Kadena High School Gymnasium.

“The students will leave here tonight with a handful of pamphlets and have a head start on their careers,” said Young. “If they need more information, they can come to me, or any of the school counselors at any time.”
