SILVERDALE, Wash. – Rear Adm. David Kriete, commander, Submarine Group 9 from Brooklyn, New York, spoke at the Kitsap County Veterans Day Ceremony at the Kitsap Sun Pavilion Fairgrounds, Nov. 11.

The Veterans Day Ceremony included over 40 various military and fraternal organizations, vintage military vehicles and the Bremerton High School Marching Band.

“It’s really cool to see all of the old military gear and vehicles,” said Jake Howard, a resident of Silverdale. “My grandpa was in the Navy and I always looked up to him, so it’s great to see everyone together honoring their family and friends that served as well.”

The annual event is a chance to reflect on the burdens borne by so few in the name of so many, to support those who have worn a uniform and the families who stand alongside them.

“While you are here at the ceremony, I would like to ask you to hear the stories of these veterans, many may never be written down and the lives these individuals have led in service of our country are truly amazing,” said Kriete.

It is with the sacrifice and commitment of veterans that we are able to enjoy the freedoms we have today, he added.

“Many [veterans] served voluntarily and some were called when our nation needed them most,” said Guy Stitt, ambassador of the Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Navy League. “Some were never given thanks for their service, but let’s make sure every one of them knows how much they mean to us and the freedom we enjoy here today.”

President Woodrow Wilson originally instituted Armistice Day on Nov. 11, 1919, to commemorate those who gave their lives in the service of their country during World War I. The title then changed in 1954, under Dwight Eisenhower's presidency, to Veterans Day. Along with this title change came a core change as well. It was established to honor veterans from all U.S. conflicts.
