ORLANDO, Fla. - Distinguished guests, military leaders and family members gathered together, Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015 at the 164th Air Defense Artillery (ADA) Brigade Headquarters in Orlando, Fla. to honor Joint Task Force Archangel as they prepared to depart for an estimated year-long mission to the National Capital Region (NCR) in support of Operation Noble Eagle (ONE).

During their mission, the Task Force will provide Command and Control support to the Homeland Defense mission by protecting the NCR with the use of radar, ground based air defense systems and communications equipment. Once they arrive in Washington, D.C the Soldiers will assume the mission from the Ohio 174th ADA BDE, and all of their countless hours of training will be put into action.

“I am certain that when Col. Mike Perry arrives in D.C. with his team, they will be more than ready to assume this critically important mission,” said Maj. Gen. Michael A. Calhoun, adjutant general of the Florida Army National Guard.

Col. Michael J. Perry, commander of TF Archangel, not only takes this mission’s importance seriously but he takes it personally. Perry’s mother, present during the ceremony, was working at the Pentagon on September 11th when it was attacked. “We are here to ensure that this does not happen again, not on our watch,” said Perry.

Ever since the implementation of ONE, the 164th has played an essential role in supporting the National Capital Region-Integrated Air Defense System (NCR-IADS) mission, with this being their sixth rotation.

“I am excited and I’m proud. This is probably the most prestigious mission I could do for the Guard,” said Warrant Officer (CW3) Cynthia Southard, TF Archangel battle captain. This will be Southard’s second deployment and first rotation to the NCR.

Operation Noble Eagle was created in response to the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, and was put into action in 2003. One of only few in-country deployments, the NCR mission exemplifies the National Guard’s crucial role in defending the homeland and its citizens.
