TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. - “Old Corps? New Corps? It doesn’t matter as long as it is Marine Corps.”

These words rang true as service members, young and old, gathered to share memories, break bread, and celebrate the Marine Corps’ 240th birthday during the Combat Center’s 18th annual Retiree Ball at the Officer’s Club, Nov. 7, 2015. Combat Center Chief of Staff Col. James F. Harp served as the ceremony’s guest of honor.

“It’s a special function, especially for the retiree community,” said Candace Coward, catering and events director, Marine Corps Community Services. “It’s a time of reminiscences to look back and reflect on their years of service.”

Local retired service members attended the event put on by the Retiree Ball Committee with help from volunteers from Headquarters Battalion who provided the color guard and Marines to serve as cake escorts. Following a traditional ceremony, retirees ate dinner with the volunteers and shared stories about their time in service.

“It’s about tradition and camaraderie; the Marine Corps has a special camaraderie,” said Dave Werner, local retired Marine. “I always look forward to the ball and haven’t missed more than a couple Marine Corps birthdays in 65 years.”

According to Werner, although a lot has changed over the years, he feels the more things change, the more they stay the same.

“These young men and women from all 50 states are still signing on the line, vowing to defend our country,” Werner said. “The saying, ‘some gave all and all gave some,’ is still true today because some are still giving all and it makes me proud of these young Marines.”
