Miesau, Germany – The 212th Combat Support Hospital, 30th Medical Brigade hosted a senior level cadet from the U.S. Military Academy June 30 to July 18 as part of the Cadet Troop Leader Training program.

Cadet Tiara Hansen spent more than two weeks with the 212th CSH working alongside Army leaders to gain a realistic leadership experience while performing duties normally given to newly assigned second lieutenant in the active Army.

CTLT focuses on leadership experience, familiarization, and improving the knowledge of cadets in the areas of command, training, administration, and logistics.

Hansen was able to grow in these areas by observing management of vehicle and medical equipment maintenance, attending weekly battalion and company training meetings, developing composite risk management for several platoon training events, serving as an assistant officer in charge for an M16 range, and developing and presenting a class on the Army’s eight step training model.

During her time at Miesau Army Depot, Hansen’s interactions were not limited to the platoon leader she shadowed. She also worked with officers and non-commissioned officers of various specialties.

“It was an excellent experience overall. I learned so much from interacting with the officers, NCOs, and junior enlisted. I received really good advice on expectations of a junior officer from everyone. They helped give me a better understanding and glimpse of daily life on active duty. I have more realistic expectations upon commissioning,” said Hansen.

Hansen currently studies psychology at West Point and hopes to commission as a medical service officer next spring. She is interested in behavior health and hopes to either specialize in social work or psychology later in her career. She was able to speak with several psychologists at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center who provided her with more information regarding behavioral health career paths

“One thing I learned about the [Army Medical Department] is that is there are many career paths available. There is no predetermined route
you need to follow in your career, you have so many options,” said Hansen.

Overall, CTLT was a satisfying experience for Hansen who has spent the first half of the year studying abroad.

“Prior to coming to Germany, I studied Portuguese in Brazil,” said Hansen. “Afterwards, I had a few days to repack in the states and immediately flew to Germany.”

During her time working with CTLT, Hansen was able to explore famous cities such as Heidelberg, Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber, Munich, and the scenic Rhine River. At the end of the summer, she will begin her senior, or “firstie,” year at West Point. Lessons learned from CTLT will help prepare her for a cadet officer role at West Point and for her future rank as a second lieutenant in the United States Army.
