    Story by Sgt. Garett Hernandez

    1st Cavalry Division

FORT HOOD, Texas – Command Sgt. Maj. Andrew Barteky, 28th senior enlisted adviser for the 1st Cavalry Division, relinquished his duties to Command Sgt. Maj. Maurice Jackson during a change of responsibility ceremony here at Cooper Field Tuesday.

Barteky left home for Army basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky at the age 17, and entered the Army as a cavalry scout in 1987.

“I have a fair number of relatives that served in the military, and I wanted to serve as well,” said Barteky.

After his time with the First Team, Barteky is headed to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington where he will be working in the operations section of I Corps.

“CSM Barteky has a unique talent of being able to coach you, without you realizing you are being coached,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Berkeley Parsons, senior enlisted adviser, Division Artillery, 1st Cav. Div. “He could often improve your way of viewing a problem or your approach to resolving an issue through casual conversation, then he’d let you run with it.”

It was in 1990 while stationed in Germany, once Barteky became a team leader, that he knew he wanted to make the Army a career, he said.

“When I became a team leader and was first responsible for the training, quality of life and the capabilities of a team is when I knew I wanted to do this as a career,” said Barteky.

During his 28 years of service, Barteky has been stationed in Germany, Egypt and Honduras, and stateside at Fort Knox, Kentucky; Fort Wainwright, Alaska and Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to name a few.

“Sgt. Maj. Barteky is my standard bearer,” said Maj. Gen. Michael Bills, commanding general, 1st Cav. Div. “He is the model husband, Soldier and leader. He is the epitome of character, competence and commitment.”

Barteky has been in the middle of the action, whether it’s the division’s deployment to Afghanistan, the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team rotation to Korea, sending Soldiers to Cuba or the many training rotations to the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California, explained Bills.

“Fulfilling all those missions in support of our national efforts has been a challenge, but I think this division has done it extremely well, and being part of that has been very rewarding,” said Barteky.

During his tenure at the division, Barteky implemented the platoon challenge. On Monday afternoons, he selects a unit to provide a platoon to be tested on individual tasks and drills, including first aid, radio operations, weapons proficiency and land navigation.

When asked what his proudest moment was during his tenure as the First Team’s senior enlisted adviser, he said the answer was simple.

“When I see Soldiers demonstrating the professionalism and the level of discipline that the American people have come to expect from the Army,” he said, shedding light on his proudest moment.

“A common theme Command Sgt. Maj. Barteky drove was to improve the culture of the 1st Cav. Div.,” said Parsons. “The history and tradition of the First Team was developed by achieving great feats. His focus was to carry that on by our Soldiers and leaders becoming experts in the fundamentals, to be outstanding Soldiers first, then experts in their respective specialties.”

Jackson, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, enlisted in the Army in August 1987. He joins the First Team after arriving from Fort Riley, Kansas, where he was the rear detachment noncommissioned officer in charge while the 1st Infantry Division was deployed.
