    30th Medical Brigade

SAN GREGORIO, Spain – The 30th Medical Brigade (MED BDE) with cooperation from Spanish, Belgium, Canadian, and German military medical assets, provided drop zone and Role I medical coverage for Distinguished Visitor (DV) day Nov. 4, 2015, in San Gregorio, Spain for Trident Juncture 2015 (TJ15), NATO’s largest military exercise since 2002.

The DV day’s audience included senior NATO political and military leaders, as well as other military and host nation officials. Events during the day included press briefings, a joint land heavy military demo featuring tanks and explosions, with the highlight event showcasing approximately 600 82nd Airborne Division Soldiers performing an airborne drop across a five kilometer drop zone.

Medical coverage for the airborne operation included roaming medics on the drop zone, ambulances on standby, a Role I (first aid, immediate lifesaving measures, and triage) in close proximity to the drop zone with air evacuation assets, Role IIe (triage and resuscitation, treatment and patient holding, emergency dental treatment, and surgical capabilities) assets were available in in San Gregorio, and Role III (specialist diagnostic resources, specialist surgical and medical capabilities, preventive medicine, food inspection, dentistry, and operational stress management teams) assets in Zaragoza for casualties needing higher level care.

In preparation for DV day numerous meetings took place prior to and during the exercise to ensure a medical plan was in place for the worst case scenario: a Soldier sustaining traumatic injuries.

Capt. Cody Chase, 30th Medical Brigade Air Evacuation Officer, was part of the medical planning team for TJ15. This is the first exercise where he has worked with this many nations. More than 30 nations participated in this exercise.

“The more moving pieces there are, the more coordination is required,” says Capt. Chase. “However, when it comes together it’s very rewarding to see the plan in action.”

Total injuries during the jump were very minimal on DV day and Soldiers who needed care received the best care from a team of multinational partners.

The 30th Medical Brigade not only provided medical coverage for DV day, but also collaborated with NATO allied partners to provide medical support for Trident Juncture 2015 to approximately 36,000 soldiers from more than 30 countries in four areas of the exercise from Oct. 19 to Nov. 6, 2015: San Gregorio, Spain; Chinchilla, Spain; Capo Teulada, Italy; and Santa Margarida, Portugal.
