NORFOLK, Va. - In time to help those less fortunate this holiday season, the Chief Petty Officer Association (CPOA) at Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 4 delivered 45 donated coats to the Union Mission in Norfolk, Nov. 20.
CSG-4’s CPOA conducted the coat drive earlier in the month in an effort to continue to serve the community.
“As an active member of the CPOA, I always want to do my part for the cause,” said Chief Master-at-Arms Terry L. McGonigal, the command’s lead for the coat drive. “With the upcoming winter season, it is important to ensure the mission has a stock pile of coats and jackets for those in need.”
The Union Mission provides food, clothing and shelter to more than 350 homeless and hurting men, women and children daily. Once physical needs are met, job and life skills training are offered to help people out of homelessness and better care for themselves and their families.
“We are grateful to the members of CSG-4 for their generous donation of coats for those in need,” said Linda C. Jones with Union Mission Ministries. “With the cold weather almost here the need for warm winter clothing is essential to our guests. It can even save a life.”
CSG-4 personnel plan to do more for the community. In fact, the command’s First Class Petty Officer Association (FCPOA) plans to hold a food drive.
Commanded by Rear Adm. Richard Butler, CSG-4 is a team of experienced Sailors, Marines, government civilians and reservists, who mentor, train and assess Atlantic Fleet combat forces to forward deploy. CSG-4’s experts shape the readiness of Atlantic Fleet CSGs, Expeditionary Strike Groups (ESG), Amphibious Readiness Groups (ARG) and Independent Deploying ships.
Formerly known as Commander Strike Force Training Atlantic (CSFTL), CSG-4, along with subordinate commands, Tactical Training Group Atlantic (TTGL) and Expeditionary Warfare Training Group Atlantic (EWTGL), prepare every Atlantic-based CSG, ARG and Independent Deployer for sustained, forward-deployed, high tempo operations.
