ATLANTIC OCEAN – Aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for a scheduled port visit Nov. 23.
“Our Sailors are very excited to be here,” said Capt. Timothy C. Kuehhas, Washington’s commanding officer. “Visiting a beautiful port such as Rio de Janeiro is a rare opportunity. We feel fortunate to be able to tour the city and experience its wonderful culture.”
Rio de Janeiro is the final port visit in the Washington’s Southern Seas 2015 deployment before arriving to her new homeport in Virginia. While in port, crew members have an opportunity to tour, shop and enjoy liberty. Washington Sailors are scheduled to interact with the Brazilian locals Nov. 24 during community relations (COMREL) and community service (COMSERV) projects.
During the port visit, Washington’s afloat Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program offered a variety of tours and activities for the Sailors to enjoy. Events include a tour of Sugarloaf Mountain, enjoying the city sights, visiting the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer at the top of Corcovado Mountain, a hike through the Atlantic Rain Forest, and a music and dance performance at the Plataforma Show.
“I’m really excited to be in Brazil,” said Personnel Specialist Seaman Christopher Robinson. “I’m going to see the Christ the Redeemer statue and try Brazilian barbecue. This is our final port visit before our final stretch home so I want to see and experience as much as I possibly can.”
Washington will be hosting a reception for close to 400 guests following her arrival in Rio de Janeiro as well as offering tours visitors during the duration of the port visit.
“We’re humbled by our host nation’s hospitality and grateful for the opportunity to partake in COMREL projects with the local community,” said Kuehhas. “The crew appreciates the opportunity to engage in new surroundings with wonderful people, creating fond memories they will cherish for many years to come.”
Washington is deployed as part of Southern Seas 2015 which seeks to enhance interoperability, increase regional stability and build and maintain relationships with countries throughout the region through joint, multinational and interagency exchanges and cooperation.
