COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The 105mm barrel on a Mobile Gun System Stryker slowly angled towards the ceiling of a C-17 Globemaster III as the eight-by-eight wheels of the vehicle achingly climbed up the loading ramp, Nov. 20, 2015.
Soldiers of 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, worked alongside Airmen from Joint Base Mcguire-Dix-Lakehurst during cold load training in Colorado Springs.
The current mission for the Airmen of the 6th Airlift Squadron is to train and equip C-17 Globemaster III aircrews for global air and land operations for some of the most-demanding missions in Air Mobility Command.
“The training today is important because we’re working with our partners in the Air Force to ensure that our vehicles are always ready,” said Sgt. Edward Spangler, MGS Stryker Gunner, Echo Troop, 2nd Sqdn., 1st Cav. Reg., 1st SBCT, 4th Inf. Div. “At a moment’s notice we can get them loaded up, ready to go and ready to fight.”
Spc. Kerry Huckabee, MGS Stryker driver, Echo Troop, 2nd Sqdn., 1st Cav. Reg., 1st SBCT, 4th Inf. Div., was the first Fort Carson Soldier to drive a MGS Stryker, weighing more than 54,000 pounds, onto a C-17 Globemaster III.
“It was pretty easy,” said Huckabee. “Just watch your ground guide, do everything exactly how they say and don’t make any drastic turns.”
Valuable lessons were learned by all of the service members involved in the joint training.
“I’ve never loaded an armored vehicle like this before so it was good training for me and the Soldiers,” said Airman 1st Class Alex Schletz, load master, 6th Airlift Squadron. “They’ve [the Soldiers] learned how to help out the load masters, understand how the tie-downs work on heavy vehicles and how it’s supposed to be loaded on the jet for faster operations in the future.”
