JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska – Moving and adjusting to a new state or new country is something that comes with the military territory. Thankfully, there is a group on base here that strives to make adjusting to your new home both easy and fun.
The 673rd Force Support Squadron (FSS) is a comprehensive network of support and leisure services designed to enhance the lives of Soldiers, Airmen, their families, civilian employees, military retirees and other eligible participants. Known as the MWR to Soldiers, the 673rd FSS contributes to the Army and Air Force’s strength and readiness by offering services that reduce stress, build skills and self-confidence and foster strong esprit-de-corps.
“Our service members and families work very hard and serve every day,” said Lucia Lopez-Hisijos, 673rd FSS Marketing Assistant and Graphic Designer and Army spouse. “This often requires us to be away from our hometowns, our families, and our friends. Being at a duty station far from home can be very difficult. We want to mediate some of that stress by bringing our service members and families fun activities both indoors and out.”
Some of the services provided include outdoor recreation trips such as ice fishing, kayaking, snowboarding and skiing, indoor mini golf, indoor full-size playground for children, the Information, Tickets and Travel (ITT) office, the Arctic Warrior Rodeo and Arctic Thunder Open House.
“What I love the most about my job is the ability to make a daily impact in the lives of folks here at JBER,” said Steve Sarandos, 673rd FSS Marketing Director. “It sounds corny, but seeing the smiles on folks faces when we work with them to get free tickets, prizes, etc. means the world to me. I remember how impactful the FSS events were on my childhood, and I appreciate the fact that I’m able to give back in some way as an adult.”
In the spirit of giving back the 673rd Force Support Squadron is currently hosting a selfie contest, during which they will give more away more than $1,600 in prizes.
The contest will give away:
- An Xbox1
- 48" Smart TV
- $250 Visa Gift Card
- Assortment of $25 gift cards
- Four-pack of tickets to December concerts at the Williwaw
- One outdoor recreation trip voucher
- Five passes to the Polar Bowl NYE party
- 12 pack of passes to the Seward Sea Life Center
- $50 FSS Gift Card
To enter, people need to take a selfie using a FSS facility and post it to the FSS Facebook page with the hashtag #holidayswithFSS and the location of the picture. The nine pictures with the most likes December 17 will be awarded the prizes.
The FSS will also be hosting Winter Fest Dec. 18, an installation Holiday Party which will be open to all service members, civilians and families.
After working in FSS for almost four years, Sarandos encourages Soldiers, Airmen and their families to take advantage of the unique opportunities Alaska has to offer.
“Give us a chance to show you the wonders of Alaska and how much we as an entire squadron care about you,” he said.
You can view upcoming events on their website www.jberlife.com, follow them on Facebook or pick up the monthly publication JBER Life! Magazine at any magazine rack on base.
