PESTERA, Romania – Soldiers from 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion and Black Sea Rotational Force Marines planted trees here Nov. 14.
“Plant Good Deeds” is a nationwide program that has treated almost 200 acres of previously unproductive public lands.
Volunteers from 30 cities planted more than 300,000 trees. Forests cover just 27 percent of Romania while the European average is 29 percent.
Five green nongovernmental organizations and the Romanian Ministry of Environment, Waters, and Forests endorse the program with the objective of fighting against the aggressive deforestation caused by theft or aggressive real estate development.
TFWS’s involvement in the campaign demonstrates the support the U.S. gives their allies and strengthens the bond between the U.S. and Romania.
Spc. Denise Boehmer, 18th CSSB Soldier and Cleveland, Ohio, native said, “I liked that I was able to help out the Romanian community.”
“This action is part of the pillar of our strategy to extend our national forest,” said Gavrilescu Gratiels of the Minister of Environment, Waters, and Forests.
The campaign demonstrates that a strong partnership between the U.S. and Romania will surmount the latter’s large share of afforestation.
