FORT HOOD, Texas - The senior enlisted adviser from the nation’s warfighting command visited Soldiers here Dec. 7-9 to discuss trends and priorities for Army leaders and to get feedback from troops.
Command Sgt. Maj. Scott Schroeder, U.S. Army Forces Command, visited Soldiers of the 1st Cavalry Division at several venues and held an open forum Tuesday with first sergeants and sergeants major from the First Team at Howze Auditorium.
Schroeder, who served as the III Corps and Fort Hood senior enlisted adviser from September 2012 to June 2014, discussed FORSCOM priorities and topics with leaders, including improving readiness, equipping the force, training, operationalizing the total Army, sponsorship, career progression and development, family care plans and many other topics.
Senior leaders need to take the time to assess their formations and make sure Soldiers are receiving the training and individual oversight that makes the difference, said Schroeder.
“You learn a lot just by going to the field for a few weeks,” Schroeder said.
He made a point of emphasizing the importance of safety in all facets of Army operations.
“Safety is huge, and we are literally killing ourselves in training,” he said. “Let’s stop rewriting the lessons that have already been written in blood.”
Soldiers and leaders from across the Cav said they learned a lot during Schroeder’s visit.
“It’s a unique opportunity for our leaders within the 1st Cavalry Division to gain perspective and insight from the FORSCOM command sergeant major, and it’s equally important that he has the opportunity to gain feedback from our leaders and noncommissioned officers,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Berk Parsons, 1st Cavalry Division Artillery senior enlisted adviser.
