KLEBER KASERNE, Germany, Dec. 4, 2015 - U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron took the first place team trophy and two first place weight-class trophies after competing in the 7th Mission Support Command’s (MSC) Army Combatives Tournament at Kleber Kaserne, Germany on Dec. 4. The tournament gave Soldiers and Airmen an opportunity to learn from one another and apply their combatives skills against other competitors in an effort to be ranked number one.
Several of the Airmen and Soldiers received their level-one Army combatives training through the 7th MSC Modern Army Combatives courses, and competed in this tournament. The tournament gave 22 competitors a chance to hone in their newly acquired stills, put this new knowledge to the test and potentially win within their assigned weight categories.
U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class David Maybury, the tournament director and Army combatives instructor, taught several of the Soldiers and Airmen within the courses.
“It is an important program not only in physical ways but also a good warrior tool to have in combat,” Maybury explained.
“As we see going on in the world today, we also use it outside of the Army. A lot of people have to use it in their civilian life to protect themselves, family and their friends,” he said referring to the recent attempted terrorist attack by a man armed with a Kalashnikov AK-47, a pistol and box cutter, that was thwarted by U.S. Air Force Airman Spencer Stone and his friends while traveling on a civilian train bound for Paris, France from Amsterdam, in August.
This is what one experienced fighter had to say about the combatives courses.
“With the classes, I took some things away. I think anyone with experience can still take something away from the classes,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Joseph Everett.
The tournaments are normally broken into seven separate weight classes ranging from Flyweight to Heavyweight. Each competitor was eliminated by double elimination bouts which were are either won by points or through an opponent submission.
During this most recent tournament, Staff Sgt. Joseph Everett, a C-130 crew chief, won first place in the Heavyweight class where he defeated each of his opponents through submission moves such as the “arm bar.” Staff Sgt. Everett hopes to bring similar combative tournaments to Ramstein Air Base in the future in order to increase Air Force involvement and to bring awareness to the program.
“Combatives is pretty important not only in the Army, I think we still face combat situations when we are off duty. It is important to have these skills and to put them into use and test your skills on the mat,” he said.
During the previous 7th MSC combatives competition, Staff Sgt. Everett competed and won in the Cruiserweight class; during this recent tournament he had the drive to further challenge himself.
“I came into this, wanting to do the Heavyweight division to challenge myself and see how I would do. At the end of the day you can be as strong as you want but if you don’t have really strong technique then sometimes the small guy can win and that is what happened today. I am just happy to show up and compete; it was a good tournament,” explained Everett
The unit hopes to continue to hold these tournaments every six months to bring multiple highly skilled military combatives competitors from all across Europe into a single arena. The next tournament to be held will be the U.S. Army Europe Combatives Championship which is projected to be hosted by the 7th Mission Support Command on Feb. 27, 2016 at Kleber Kaserne
