SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Council Navy League of the United States honored a Marine spouse from 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, with the 2015 Sea Services Marine Corps Spouse of the Year Award, Dec. 4, during a ceremony at their monthly luncheon in San Diego.
Amanda McMillan, wife of Chief Warrant Officer Christopher McMillan, a bulk fuel officer with 7th ESB, was honored for her hard work and dedication to her family, community and 7th ESB.
Notably, this is the fifth consecutive year a I MEF spouse has won the award.
“I’m more than honored to receive the award, but I know I could have done, and can do, so much more for the community,” said Amanda, a Zephyrhills, Florida, native.
Throughout year, she used her experience as a Marine spouse to help other military families manage the unique challenges of military life.
“I’m really proud of everything she does and I’m glad she received recognition for her work,” said Christopher McMillan. “She’s able to manage her time with kids, me being gone, and helping others.”
The ceremony was tailored to recognize spouses married to service members from the Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard. Members of the League reviewed 20 finalist submissions from throughout San Diego County.
“There are three heavily weighted categories; service to their military command, volunteer service in their community, and personal accomplishments,” said Jon Berg-Johnson, president of administration for San Diego Council of the Navy League. “We also take into account if they were serving a deployed command, awards received and their personal essay. The entries we received were overwhelming. Many of our spouses serve multiple organizations, are earning Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, while some completed marathons and mud runs. It’s absolutely amazing.”
Amanda was selected for her dedication to educating and volunteering for a variety of groups, including special needs children, new military families, spouses of Marine leadership and fellow spouses she describes as sharing a similar life workload as hers.
In addition, Amanda has dedicated over 600 hours at her local elementary school as well as assists with the 7th ESB command events including providing over 100 Thanksgiving meals for this year and maintains the command spouse Facebook page.
“These are just a few ways I can give back. I can never express how thankful I am for the services the military has provided me and my family,” said Amanda.
