SAN DIEGO – Amphibious Construction Battalion (ACB) 1 held a change of command ceremony on Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, Aug. 7.
Capt. Greg Vinci, previously the Contingency Engineer at Naval Facilities Engineering Command Pacific, relieved Capt. Eric M. Aaby as commanding officer.
Vinci graduated from Virginia Military Institute with bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He later earned a master’s degree in civil engineering from the Pennsylvania State University. He received his commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program.
“If I learn one thing over the past 22 years is that good people choose to do meaningful work,” said Vinci. “I look forward over the next two years to writing the history of Amphibious Construction Battalion 1 together.”
The change of command was a formal passing of the colors from Aaby to Vinci and a remembrance to past accomplishments.
Under Aaby’s leadership, ACB 1 participated in four maritime prepositioning force exercises, sent detachments to countries in Asia for Pacific Partnership 2013 to 2015, and worked with ACB 2 to maintain certification with the elevated causeway system. ACB 1 also assisted NASA with the Orion Spacecraft, held two battalion field training exercises and block training evolutions, passed 3M inspections with scores above 92 percent and kept the command working with a strict budget.
The guest speaker Capt. Kevin P. Flannagan, commander, Naval Beach Group 1, called attention to the Sailors of ACB 1 and commented that Aaby’s accomplishments are a result of their hard work.
After receiving the Legion of Merit from Flannagan, Aaby took the time to address the command for a final time.
“Having a command is a privilege and a sacred trust,” said Aaby. “I will always cherish the memories, to lead a fine crew of professional men and women has been the greatest honor.”
Aaby moves on to his next assignment with Naval Facilities Engineering Command Mid- Atlantic in August.
The “We put the Sea in Seabees” battalion specializes in ship-to-shore transportation of Navy and Marine Corps cargo embarked in maritime prepositioning force ships and is gearing up for several exercises scheduled later this year.
