CHARLESTON, S.C. - A port call sealift shipment of mine resistant vehicles, Navy patrol boats, and Navy supercargo personnel to the US Central Command in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom were loaded by the seaport terminal army command, 841st Transportation Battalion, in Charleston, S.C., April 14.
"This operation requires coordination from multiple services to include the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and merchant Marines, said Maj. Leslie Carter, an operations officer temporarily attached to the 841st Transportation Battalion. In addition, there are some highly dedicated and expert DA civilians and contracted civilians providing labor and planning for the mission."
Some of the mine resistant vehicles called MRAPs, mine resistant ambush protected vehicles, are life-saving vehicles for Soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan because they help deflect and counter blasts from improvised explosive devices.
The shipment also included up-armored humvees and Navy cargo from Norfolk, VA. The Navy cargo included patrol boats that will be used for seaport security in the Central Command area.
The Navy unit sent two personnel, called supercargoes, which will travel with the vessel to the Middle East and monitor their cargo on the vessel.
