FORT HOOD, Texas — Thirty-eight units with the 1st Medical Brigade received safety awards Dec. 18, 2015, at the Palmer Theater on Fort Hood, Texas.
“It’s inspiring,” said Col. Allan J. Darden Sr., the 1st Medical Brigade commander. “When Soldiers are doing the right thing, and they don’t do it because of the award, but they do it because that’s the right thing to do, that’s awesome, and then for them to be recognized for it is magnificent.”
The Army Accident Prevention Award of Accomplishment is a Department of the Army and organization-level safety award. To qualify for the award, the organization must complete 12 consecutive months, a major training exercise or complete an actual deployment of greater than 120 days without experiencing an accident attributable to human error.
“I’ve been doing this job for many years, and it’s a very unique thing when you have this many units who have achieved that award in a year,” said Kenneth Dickerson, the occupation and safety health specialist 1st Medical Brigade. “We have a good team, a good safety program and hopefully we’ll be able to maintain that momentum.”
Not a very easy award to achieve, Darden credits the professionalism of the leaders within the varying units for the brigade’s success.
“I think I have some of the best leaders in the Army, and I have some of the best non-commissioned officers in the Army as well,” said Darden. “The focus has been on teamwork and safety and the leaders have gotten after that and the Soldiers have responded to it. That’s how this works, it doesn’t work any other way.”
Looking to the future, Darden said his unit will continue to strive for the award again.
“It’s great to get the award, it’s great that we’ve done well, but this is something you’ve got to keep doing,” said Darden. “Not only do you keep doing it, you have to get better at it and continue to work on teamwork.”
