HONOLULU - The Regional Health Command-Pacific (RHC-P) recently had the pleasure of having Lt. Col. Ganchimeg Lkhagvasuren, Chief Medical Officer for the Mongolian Armed Forces, visit the Oahu based RHC-P Military Health Readiness Platforms, Dec. 14-17, 2015.
Lkhagvasuren’s visit continues the RHC-P's focus on medical diplomacy throughout the Indo-Asia-Pacific area of responsibility; sharing medical technologies, approaches, and best practices for the betterment of health throughout the region.
The Mongolian military has a rich tradition of female Soldiers serving in leadership positions. During ancient times Genghis Khan appointed his daughters as Army Combat Generals and some women were Mongol city commanders.
In today's Mongolian Military Force, which averages around 25,000 Service Members, there are only 20 female officers who are at the rank of Lt. Col; none higher.
Lkhagvasuren will soon break that barrier, as she has been selected to be promoted to the rank of Colonel in the very near future; which will make her the highest ranking female officer in the Mongolian Armed Forces.
During her visit to the RHC-P Headquarters, Lkhagvasuren met with RHC-P's Command Team, Brig General Patrick Sargent and Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Luciano, and she was able to ascertain RHC-P's approach to Access to Care and Army Medicine's philosophy of providing High Reliability Healthcare.
She also had the opportunity to learn about the operational aspect of managing Army Medicine's largest region and she visited RHC-P's largest Health Readiness Platform, Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC), where she saw how world class healthcare is provided on a large scale, as well as how a teaching hospital develops young healthcare providers into seasoned professionals.
Lkhagvasuren also met with RHC-P's Veteran Affairs partners here on Oahu, the VA Pacific Islands Healthcare System, where she and the VA staff discussed the differences and similarities between providing healthcare to the veterans of Mongolia and the United States.
Lkhagvasuren took the opportunity during her time at TAMC to provide a presentation to the staff on the "Healthcare in the Mongolian Military Medical System". Those in attendance had the chance to see the challenges faced and approaches taken by Lkhagvasuren, and her team, as they provide healthcare to Mongolian force.
Perhaps one of the most interesting stops on her tour was Lkhagvasuren’s visit to the Fisher House - Tripler Army Medical Center.
There, Lkhagvasuren seemed to thoroughly enjoy learning about Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher and their dedication to the Service Men and Women of the United States Armed Forces, as well as seeing how we use the Fisher House to support patients and family members who need a place to stay during periods of hospitalization and recovery, and she really enjoyed meeting the guests and experiencing the "Aloha Spirit" that only the Fisher House here in Hawaii can provide.
Lkhagvasuren completed her week with a tour of the United States Army Health Clinic-Schofield Barracks (USAHC-SB) and the Warrior Transition Battalion-Hawaii, where she saw how Army Medicine directly impacts the War Fighter and their families.
All-in-all, the week that Lkhagvasuren toured the RHC-P footprint was a great success in the continued efforts of building & strengthening professional medical relationships with the partner nations within the Pacific region. She was able to share as much about her healthcare system, as she obtained about the RHC-P's system for health.
Perhaps on her next visit, she can share how what she learned here, helped her develop the healthcare provided to the Mongolian Armed Forces.
