BAUMHOLDER, Germany – Gen. Dennis Via, commanding general of Army Material Command, presented 317th Support Maintenance Company with the Secretary of Defense Award for Excellence in Maintenance Training, Advice, and Assistance of Foreign Security Forces Dec. 8 in Phoenix, Arizona, highlighting 317th Support Maintenance Company’s accomplishments working with NATO allies and partner nations.
The secretary of defense announced the winners of the award in October, recognizing 317th SMC’s training and advisement of forces from allies such as Lithuania, Latvia, Moldova, Romania, and Germany throughout the year.
The “Wolfpack” company, from 16th Sustainment Brigade’s 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, is the singular maintenance support company providing field maintenance on an area basis and return equipment to the user for contingency operations within the EUCOM, AFRICOM and CENTCOM areas of responsibility.
“This award belongs to the Soldiers in the company,” said Capt. Angel Davila, commander of 317th SMC. “I give all the credit to them. I’m honored for my unit to receive this award. It means that we’re the best in what we do in maintenance support and improving interoperability with our allies.”
Training multinational partners on operating, maintaining, troubleshooting and parts support for a variety of vehicles during the past year, the 317th gained many accolades. Along with building maintenance and recovery support capacity with maintainers from Romania, Bulgaria and Austria during Exercise Combined Resolve III, the unit also supported the Croatian Defense Ministry establishing a logistics support program for more than $1 billion in transferred mine resistant ambush protected vehicles.
“Hard work pays off when you’re doing the right thing,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Carlos Herron, the electronics systems maintenance technician with 317th SMC. “It’s a shock – we weren’t expecting this at all. But the Soldiers deserve that recognition for the hard work they put in day in and day out.”
Each year, the Secretary of Defense Maintenance Awards Program recognizes outstanding achievements by field-level units engaged in military equipment and weapons system maintenance within the Department of Defense. Six Secretary of Defense Maintenance Awards are presented to units from small, medium and large categories.
“The Wolfpack Soldiers earned the recognition of the Department of Defense in the hard work they put in every day,” said 1st Lt. Jeremy Dollar, the 317th SMC maintenance control officer. “It gives them additional motivation to continue on their tradition of excellence for the Wolfpack Company and the Knight’s Brigade.”
