DILI, Timor-Leste – Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 3, Construction Civic Action Detail (CCAD) Timor-Leste, volunteered at an orphans and disadvantaged children’s Christmas party hosted by the Rotary Club of Dili and Dili Hash House Harriers Club at the World Bank in Dili, Timor-Leste, Dec. 6.

The 27 Seabees assigned to NMCB 3 and Three Seabees from NMCB 4 participated and organized games of football, soccer, nail painting, and swinging from banyan tree vines for over 600 children.

"The US Navy Seabees turned up and did a wonderful job,” said Bob Quiggan of Dili Rotary Club. “They were playing with all the kids, keeping them entertained and engaged. Anywhere you saw a Seabee, you'd see a gaggle of shouting, laughing little faces.”

After a few hours of activities, the Rotary Club of Dili and Dili Hash provided hot sausage sandwiches, drinks, and presents for the children. The Seabees provided crowd control for the overwhelming amount of children.

"It was a very hot, but probably one of the most rewarding days of the whole year,” said Corey Hill, Dili Rotary Club President.  “The Seabee detachment helped out tremendously."

Construction Electrician 3rd Class Jayke Boughton and Engineering Aide 3rd Class Laura Ruiz brought smiles on the children’s faces when they handed out the children their presents dressed as Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

“Due to the long weekend the number of volunteers was way down and the Seabees saved the day,” said Daryl Mills OAM, Rotary International Liaison Officer for Timor-Leste.

Whether the volunteers visited the party to give gifts or play with children, their mission was the same. They all came out to improve the lives of those they met.

The CCAD’s mission is to execute engineering civic assistance projects, conducts skills exchanges with the host nation, and perform community relations events to help enhance shared capabilities and maintain relationships.

NMCB 3 is homeported in Port Hueneme, California, and is currently deployed to Okinawa, Japan. The mission of NMCB 3 is to support Navy and joint forces throughout the U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM) Area of Responsibility (AOR) through construction projects and humanitarian missions in more than 14 different geographical locations.
