WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - In Williamsburg, Virginia, Christmas is serious business. Since 1965, the small community has banded together by inviting local families and businesses to welcome in the new holiday season through its Community Christmas Parade. This year, the parade was held Dec. 5.
The Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance hosted its 50th Annual Community Christmas Parade entitled, “Our Golden Christmas 1965-2015.” The parade route traveled down Richmond Road, beginning at the College of William & Mary, through Merchants Square, then on to Henry Street.
Navy Expeditionary Medical Support Command (NEMSCOM), personnel stationed in Williamsburg, enjoyed the festivities as well and a couple of members shared some of their thoughts about the celebration.
“The atmosphere was great. I was not expecting this many people to attend, so it was a very pleasant experience,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Michael Perezdejesus, a quality assurance evaluator who monitors, assesses and reports on contractor technical performance with regard to Civil Engineer End Items. “This was the first time my family participated in the parade. It was a really unique experience and something we will definitely remember.”
When asked if participating in the parade helped to awaken his holiday spirit, Perezdejesus shared his thoughts.
“Actually, we had the holiday spirit at my house starting around the Thanksgiving time frame. Our Christmas tree up couple of days before Thanksgiving. But I have to say that when I started researching one of the theme for this year’s parade, ‘The Little Drummer Boy,’ it really got to me. I think the story behind it and the songs associated with the story are very touching for those of us who believe.”
For other participants, the holiday spirit was ushered in a little closer to home. NEMSCOM encourages holiday decorations throughout the offices and various activities with personnel in and around the command.
“We celebrated by decorating our work spaces and having special luncheons with some of our fellow employees,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Angela Bradfield, from NEMSCOM Operations Department, Supply Division, responsible for procuring supplies for the local workforce and for Forward Deployed Medical Units. “At church, we picked two cards from the Angel Tree. Our mission was to brighten the holidays of families who may be less fortunate. This will teach my child to be humble and to appreciate her family and the things she has.”
As the holidays unite families through charitable giving, this year's Williamsburg Christmas parade also united members of the civilian and military communities. With the record it has built over the past 50 years, there’s no doubt it will continue to do so for many more years to come.
NEMSCOM is Navy Medicine’s lead agent for the deployable medical systems. Headed by Capt. Edward J. Sullivan, its mission is to support Combatant Commanders (COCOMs) by supplying the right medical resources at the right time and at the right cost anywhere in the world through configured expeditionary medical logistics products tailored to meet clinical missions based on COCOM requirements.
Its vision is to configure expeditionary medical logistics products tailored to meet clinical missions based on Area of Responsibility requirements with 100 percent of the right medical material and equipment, on time and under budget.
