CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Army product management team for light tactical vehicles (PM-LTV) leadership to include Lt. Col. Samuel Homsy and Capt. Carlos Lago visited the seaport shipment site and unit responsible for sealift of their vehicles in Charleston, S.C., April 17.

PM-LTV is responsible for the acquisition, fielding, and development of light tactical vehicles. The up-armored humvees have gone through several evolutions of change in design and acquisition since 2003. However, one steady logistics piece of the puzzle has been to maintain the Charleston seaport as the shipment depot of these vehicles to Central Command.

The military and civilian leadership of PM-LTV coordinated with Surface Deployment Distribution Command to assign Charleston as the sole shipment seaport of these vehicles. Since 2004, over 20,000 up-armored humvees have been shipped by sealift out of Charleston, S.C.

A small army unit, 841st Transportation Battalion, is in charge of the sealift shipment of all military cargo in Charleston and the East Coast.

"I wanted to recognize the professionalism and dedication of the 841st Transportation unit in the safe, secure and efficient shipment of these life-saving vehicles, said Homsy. We know this great partnership will continue to send these up-armored humvees."

Lt. Col. Randolph Haufe, 841st Commander, was impressed by the fact that PM-LTV had a close tie to the life-saving capabilities of these vehicles. Lago explained to Haufe that he survived an explosion in an up-armored humvee while in Iraq.

Homsy presented an award to Haufe in recognition of the 841st unit's outstanding success in this program. Haufe asked his team leaders to accept the award on the 841st behalf. The 841st team leaders included DA civilian Kristine Sports, operations chief, DA civilian Bob Silver, cargo documentation chief, and Roger Haines, longshoremen contractor foreman.

PM-LTV and the 841st are currently working on a joint by-line article that will highlight the milestone award and joint acquisition and logistics process.
