JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri National Guard held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the official opening of the new Family Resiliency Center and the Danner Chapel at the Ike Skelton Training Site in Jefferson City on July 11, 2015.
The center will offer Guardsmen and their families’ resources for family, mental and physical health, and spiritual issues, said Maj. Gen. Steve Danner, adjutant general of the Missouri National Guard.
“We have a facility now that we can be proud of,” said Danner. “We know that we’re doing the best we can to take care of our Soldiers, Airmen, and their families.”
The ceremony marked the culmination of a project that reflected the Guard and community’s commitment to the wellbeing of Soldiers and Airmen, their family members, and the veteran community, said Col. Chaplain Gary D. Gilmore, senior Army chaplain to the Missouri National Guard.
“How grateful I am today for you who have shared your strength to make this facility a reality,” said Gilmore. “And as with any worthy project there are many people and many efforts that have come together to make this moment possible.”
The project was funded by private donations raised by the Missouri National Guard Foundation. More than $600,000 was raised from groups including Veterans United, the Ameren Corporation and World Wide Technology, Danner said. Key contributors to the project included Joel Denney, executive director of the Missouri National Guard Association, retired Lt. Col. Don Koonce and Col. Peter Goldschmidt.
“This turned out to be a wonderful project that will provide a great service to our veterans,” said Scott Englund, the president of the Foundation. “The chapel is a great place to reflect and revitalize yourself.”
The center is situated overlooking scenic bluffs at the Guard’s headquarters. The facilities will be used for 15 different Army programs, promotion and retirement ceremonies, family and veteran events, and will host its first wedding in October.
The building can be used for a multitude of events to help maintain the Missouri National Guard’s high level of Soldier readiness and resiliency, said Danner.
