CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. - Every air commando within Air Force Special Operations Command takes pride in being a Quiet Professional with every effort geared toward being among the most lethal combat assets on the battlefield – any time, any place.
When asked how Airmen can make their actions speak louder than words, Tech. Sgt. Olin Smith, 27th Special Operations Maintenance Squadron aircraft armament expeditor, noted that Quiet Professionals are motivated by a love for their job, not by recognition: “Your actions are reflected in your work,” he said. “It’s about doing the right thing even when no one’s watching, and taking pride in your Air Force core values of service, integrity and excellence.”
Smith was promoted through the Stripes for Exceptional Performers program Jan. 4 with a surprise ceremony held by 27th Special Operations Wing Commander Col. Ben Maitre. Under the impression that he was participating in an exercise, Smith was asked for his name and rank several times before Maitre made the big reveal.
“Why do you keep telling me the wrong rank?” Maitre asked jokingly. “You’re Tech. Sgt. Smith now!”
