GEORGIA GARRISON TRAINING CENTER, Fort Stewart, Ga. - Soldiers from various units competed for the title of 78th Troop Command’s Best Warriors at Stewart on Jan 9 and 10.

There were six units participating this year with eight Soldiers competing. Both cadre and competitors prepared months in advance. The events will mimic what will happen during the state level and Soldiers still have more preparation to do if they are to be chosen to represent the 78th Troop Command.

“It was a cram session in one day,” said Staff Sgt. Ralston, a sponsor for Spc. Judy Park of B Company, 221st Military Intelligence Battalion. “On the drive up, we asked random questions to get her ready for the board.”

For the competitors and their sponsors, preparing to take on the title of representing the 78th TC wasn’t an easy task. Nonetheless, the task was accomplished. For other competitors, preparing and motivating each other didn’t end until the winners were announced.

The Best Warrior Competition events consisted of the Army Physical Fitness Test, 9-Line MEDEVAC, first aid for shock/open chest wound, assemble/disassemble weapons, 5-mile ruck march and the personal appearance board. All of which required a little inspiration.

“Mind over matter Richey,” said Sgt. Robbie Russell to Spc. Darryl Richey Jr., during the 5-mile ruck march event at the end of the first day. Both Russell and Richey are members of the 93rd Finance Management Support Unit.

Thanks to motivation from competitors and cadre, every Soldier finished all events. The end result was comradery at its best for the individual Soldier’s confidence.

“I hate losing,” said Russell after he completed the 5-mile ruck march which he jogged the entire time and came in first.

Dressed in their Army Service Uniform, all Soldiers competed well according to the personal appearance board members. In the end both Soldiers from the 93rd Finance Management Support Unit took home the title of the winner and will represent the 78th Troop Command at the state level competition.
