FORT SILL, Okla. - At approximately 0430 on Jan. 18, 1991, the crew of A Battery, 2nd Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment was alerted that an incoming Tactical Ballistic Missile (TBM) was headed into their sector of Saudi Arabia’s Dhahran Airport.
The battery immediately postured for an incoming chemical ballistic attack and quickly fired a Patriot PAC II (Patriot Advanced Capability) missile into the night sky. Within seconds, the Iraqi SCUD missile was destroyed.
This first engagement forever changed Air Defense Artillery. From doctrinal measures in training and employment, Air Defense Artillery would morph from and Anti-Air (AA) to an Anti-Tactical Ballistic Missile (TBM) missioned force.
On Jan. 14, 2016, Brig. Gen. Christopher Spillman, commandant of the United States Army Air Defense Artillery School, hosted a 25th Anniversary Celebration in Kerwin Auditorium, Snow Hall, Fort Sill, Oklahoma. This event was scheduled to recognize the leadership involved in this historical achievement.
The celebration closed with the unveiling of a newly commissioned painting dedicated to this accomplishment.
