FORWARD OPERATING BASE KALSU, Iraq - Residents of central Iraq are improving their communities and creating a safer, healthier environment by cleaning up area canal systems.
The embedded Provincial Reconstruction Team attached to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, awarded microgrants, April 14, to leaders in Samrah, south of Baghdad, and, April 17, to Sheikh Imad of the Masudi tribe, south of Iskandariyah.
The funds awarded to the Masudi tribe, including an earlier grant, March 20, are being used in part to repair a culvert and build a footbridge over the canal.
"Local leaders have told us this is the best irrigation they have seen in their area since they can remember," said Maj. Eric Kerr, with Company B, 415th Civil Affairs, working with the ePRT.
