MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. - Security personnel aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, conducted a Security Augmentation Force recall exercise Jan. 12, to assess the service members response times and locate any deficiencies that may exist in the process.

Throughout the Marine Corps, installations train service members from multiple military occupational specialties in the necessary skills needed to augment Miramar’s Provost Marshal’s Office during times of heightened security.

“First and foremost, [the Security Augmentation Force’s] job is to ensure that the air station is secure and it can continue to run,” said Staff Sgt. Brent Williams, SAF commander for MCAS Miramar.

According to Kevin Kelley, emergency response manager for MCAS Miramar, the Marine Corps requires installations to exercise the SAF service members quarterly in order to maintain a high-level of readiness.

The recall consisted of the SAF members receiving a notification to report to the armory for weapons and gear issue and then marching to PMO where the Provost Marshal employs them based on the security needs.

“They won’t be out there doing law enforcement functions exactly,” said Kelley. “[The Security Augmentation Force] allows us flexibility to have an increased security presence at different points across the station when it’s necessary.”

Situations that call for a heightened-security presence include the MCAS Miramar Air Show due to the increased civilian traffic, and any time when there is a threat to the base or surrounding areas, said Kelley.

“Lone-wolf terrorism is on the rise so we know the threat is out there and it is sadly growing,” explained Kelley. “We have to be prepared to meet it so the [recall] exercise and others like it will help us prepare to combat it if the time comes.”
