OKINAWA, Japan – More than 20 Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (MCJROTC) Cadets from Kubasaki High School toured amphibious dock landing ship USS Germantown (LSD 42) during a scheduled port visit, Feb. 2.
“The timing of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) embarking the USS Germantown worked out well for local cadets to come out and see what the Navy and Marine Corps teams are all about,” said Capt. Thomas Kait, Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) Seven’s chief of staff. Kait conducted the ship tour.
Cadets toured the Germantown’s pilothouse, commanding officer’s cabin, combat information center, crew berthing and messing, and observed landing craft air cushion (LCAC) operations from the ship’s well deck.
Krisha Rosete, the battalion commander of Kubasaki’s MJROTC, emphasized the importance of ship tours when it comes to her and her peers deciding what career path to follow in their futures.
“Ship tours like these help young cadets understand how to prepare themselves before they join the service through seeing what Navy and Marine Corps life is really like,” said Rosete.
Junnel Layug, the battalion’s 1st Sergeant, knows that it isn’t just about seeing the fun side of serving in the armed forces.
“I hope the battalion sees how hard ship life can be,” said Layug. “What the crew does on a daily basis is not easy.”
Kait hopes the tour provided the Sailors with a deeper understanding of life in the Navy.
“I always think when the Cadets can see things for themselves, they can better gauge what they want to do through the sights, smells and sounds that a classroom can’t convey,” said Kait. “They come out and see what they can aspire to and the many different opportunities available to serve their country.”
Germantown is assigned to the Bonhomme Richard Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and is forward-deployed in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operation.
