DURHAM, N.C. – A ‘Lightning’ Brigade Soldier received his citizenship during an afternoon ceremony held at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services field office Feb. 5 in Durham.
Pvt. Mookerdjee Cetoute, a native of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and 519th Military Intelligence Battalion unit supply specialist, had a dream come true in becoming a U.S. citizen.
“This was a dream come true because I got two things that I’ve always wanted since I first stepped foot in this country, and now I’m living it” said Cetoute. “I get to defend my country and better support my family; there’s nothing more that I could ask for.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines pride as ‘delight or elation arising from some act, possession or relationship.’
Cetoute spoke of great pride in serving his new country as well as being one of America’s newest citizens.
“I was always proud of living in this country and I’m even prouder now that I am a U.S. citizen,” said Cetoute. “Now I have the right to vote if I ever want to, I don’t have certain limits on what I can be or do and this is the country of freedom.”
Although he’s been living his dream of becoming an American Soldier for approximately a year now, his dream of becoming a U.S. citizen is now a reality.
“Since I came to this country, becoming a citizen was one of my main goals,” he said. “I’m really proud to be part of this great country.”
