BAUMHOLDER, Germany- In preparation for their upcoming field training exercise ‘Knight’s Quest’ to Opole, Poland, 51st Transportation Company tested its readiness by conducting an emergency deployment readiness exercise Feb. 11.
The company dispatched and convoyed 60 vehicles out of Baumholder, Germany, to validate its vehicle and personnel readiness in anticipation of the FTX in Poland.
“When conducting an EDRE, teamwork is key. We bring in all the key leaders to determine the priorities of work and begin to build the manifest for the vehicles,” said 1st Lt. Kyle Hensley, Executive Officer for 51st Transportation Company. “As the executive officer, I ensure the necessary clearances are complete, inspect the vehicle loads with the platoon leadership, and ensure the vehicles are ready to go.”
Once the preventative maintenance checks and services, quality assurance/quality controls were completed and vehicles dispatched, the Soldiers received a convoy brief by their platoon leadership.
“March credits give us an approved route based on the dimensions and load,” said Sgt. Antrelle Bender, an operations NCO, assigned to 51st TC. “They decide what roads are able to support the load, and make sure height restrictions are met so we don’t clip the roofs of our vehicles or our loads on a bridge.”
After the return of the vehicle convoy from the EDRE, recovery operations took place concluding with an After Action Review. When asked about the purpose of the shock event, Spc. Hector Rodriguez, a motor transport operator assigned to 51st Trans. Co., described the benefit of testing systems before the culminating training event later in the month.
“It’s important to move the vehicles before we go all the way to Poland, making sure we don’t have any issues with the vehicles, that we can talk to each other over the radios, and are able to make adjustments while we still have some time. It makes the drivers a lot more comfortable to know our vehicles will be able to handle the long drive to Poland.”
The EDRE served as preparatory training, and one of the final checks to ensure systems are in place for 51st TC’s culminating training exercise Knight’s Quest, a multinational training exercise in Opole, Poland that will test the interoperability of logistics forces. Knight’s Quest will also serve as a stepping-stone for supporting Exercise Anakonda 16 in June.
