MARINE CORPS BASE, N.C. - Cooking is the leading cause of home structure fires and home fire injuries, according to the National Fire Protection Association. From 2007-2011, approximately 157,000 home fires from cooking equipment resulted in 400 deaths and 5,000 fire injuries.
"Burns are very severe and costly," said Jennifer Thomas, safety specialist with the Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune safety management department. "Medications are expensive and recovery takes a long time. For every one percent of your body that is burned, you spend approximately two days in care."
The nearest burn unit is two hours away at the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center at University of North Carolina Health Care and anyone with burns to the hands or face will be sent there, said Thomas.
"A lot of the burns we see come from kitchen cooking and grilling," Thomas. "We get comfortable with the cooking process and when we get comfortable we cheat."
To prevent burn injuries while cooking, pay attention, think five minutes ahead, read directions, check connections and maintain cleanliness, said Thomas.
If someone is burned provide necessary treatment and seek medical assistance as needed.
The following treatments are from the Mayo Clinic:
• In the instance of minor burns, use cool water to soothe the pain, remove rings or other tight items, don’t break small blisters, apply moisturizer or aloe vera lotion or gel.
• For major burns, call 911. Until they arrive, treatment for major burns includes protecting the burned person from further harm, check for signs of circulation, remove jewelry, belts and other restrictive items, don’t immerse large severe burns in cold water, elevate burn area and cover the area of the burn with a cool, moist bandage or clean cloth.
