MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - Marine Corps Community Services organized Kid’s Day at the Marine Corps Air Station Marina Aug. 13, to bring families to have quality time before the start of the new school year.

Families spent the warm summer day by the water enjoying food, drinks and time with their children.

"The purpose of Kid’s Day is to get the kids excited for the school year, give the families one last summer hurrah before the craziness of the school year starts," said Victoria Brown, recreation specialist with Marine Corps Community Services Semper Fit recreation. "As a mom myself, it gets more difficult during the school year to squeeze in a relaxed, fun time to make memories."

For the children, there were a variety of activities including inflatables, water slides, a petting zoo and dancing with the MCCS fitness department to help children socialize and spend time with their families.

"We came here to spend time with the family and enjoy some fun before school starts," said Sgt. Ricardo Asa, a calibrator with 2nd Maintenance Battalion. "Kid’s Day helps kids get everything out of their system before they have to start calming down a little bit (before school starts).

While children could take the time to play, parents had opportunities to speak with the school liaison or Kid’s Day sponsors such as USAA, MetLife or spouselink.org.

"I enjoyed the fact that my son is jumping around and having a blast and making friends," said Asa. "It’s important to bring kids together for socializing, that they know that other kids are in the neighborhood, and it’s also a great opportunity for us to meet new people too."

Kid’s Day is just one of many events families can attend to diversify their network, said Brown. Families can check out the MCCS website for information about the different events.
