MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River are home to many different outlets for training and recreation. Among the options for base residents are the pool facilities.
Each pool offers different activities and opportunities for service members and their families. Some of the different options at the pools are recreational swimming, lap swimming, group and individual swim lessons, pool parties, splash camp, instructional classes and swim school.
Because Marines are an amphibious fighting force, they must maintain a high level survival skills in the water.
"It’s important for Marines to get their training as a priority for mission readiness," said Sandy Long, administrative assistant at aquatics office aboard the air station.
Located on Camp Lejeune, there is the Area 2 pool, Wallace Creek Fitness Center indoor pool and Camp Lejeune Paradise Point pool. New River is home to the AS-4400 indoor pool, and outdoor family pool. And base housing has the Tarawa Terrace pool.
Seasonal pools require entry fees and are open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Seasonal pools include New River Outdoor Family pool, Camp Lejeune Paradise Point pool and Tarawa Terrace pool.
In addition to pool recreation, there are also venues for physical training. There are high-intensity tactical training classes to provide a unique form of training as well as free swimming lessons for active duty.
"Swimming has less impact on your body and it is just as good as running," said Amanda Allen, a Wallace Creek Fitness Center lifeguard. "It’s a lot better for those who are injured but it’s good for anyone."
