HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD, Ga. – The students of Hubert Middle School visited Hunter Army Airfield and were given an up-close look at the daily life of Soldiers and aviators of the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade Feb. 18.
Chief Warrant Officer 2 Brad Courtway and Warrant Officer Zachary McDougald are both UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter pilots with Company B, 4th Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment, 3rd CAB. The two pilots showed the students around the aircraft, letting them see firsthand what it’s like to be a pilot in the Army.
“I think the most exciting part is just seeing the young people’s interest in flying,” Courtway said. “It makes me remember my path to getting where I am and all the people I talked to.”
Tessa Baker Livingston, school counselor, Hubert Middle School was pleased to be able to give the students an opportunity to view many of the things Soldiers do every day.
“It’s awesome that we are getting a chance to touch and feel and see what’s going on in the helicopter,” Livingston said. “All of the students were given three choices on where they could go for a career day field trip and they all chose HAAF.”
After getting a chance to sit behind the controls of a helicopter, the students moved on to the engagement skills trainer. The EST is a virtual firearms simulator which allows Soldiers to practice marksmanship skills and engage in realistic scenarios with other Soldiers which helps them to build unit and squad cohesion.
Bernard Pelote is an eighth grader and said he liked the helicopter portion of the tour but he enjoyed the EST best.
“My uncle let me hold a gun before, but he never let me shoot it,” Pelote said.
The students also got to taste the fine food the Soldiers are served at the dining facility.
Justice Gillison is also an eighth grader and said she found the whole experience to be very enlightening. She said she may even entertain a career in the military.
“I just like the idea of helping people,” Gillison said. “For me this has been a very interesting visit.”
