KILLEEN, Texas – Within the association of 227 four-star generals who have served in the Army since its inception include such names as Gens. George Washington, George Patton and Raymond Odierno.
Also in that list is a general who remains near and dear to the heart of the First Team, III Corps and Fort Hood – Gen. Robert Shoemaker, who celebrated his 92nd birthday with students and faculty of Shoemaker High School here Feb. 18.
“What is rarely mentioned is Gen. Shoemaker’s continuous service and dedication to not only our great nation, but also to his community and to this school,” said Dr. John Craft, superintendent of KISD. “He is always working to improve our society and our community.”
Also in attendance at the birthday celebration were Soldiers from the school’s Adopt-A-School program partner unit, the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division – a unit that Shoemaker commanded in 1965.
“Soldiers of the 1-12 Cav are proud to partner with a school that is named after and supported by such a storied historic leader,” said Sgt. 1st Class Peter Yanez, a San Dimas, California, native. “I personally was honored to take part in the birthday celebration for General Shoemaker. What I learned was that he never stopped taking care of Soldiers, students and the community.”
He developed multiple scholarships for the students at the high school and regularly attends their sporting events and graduations. In honor of Shoemaker and his dedication to the school, the students put on a series of performances.
A common theme for the day was his drive to continue to help anyone he could by volunteering and mentoring, inspiring others to do their best to help too.
“When volunteers are asked to support the school, there is never a shortage of Soldiers wanting to participate to help the children,” said Yanez. “It gives us encouragement to serve the people [U.S. citizens] in a different way by making our communities a better place.”
