FORT STEWART, Ga. - Soldiers of Company A, 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division returned to Fort Stewart, Georgia, Feb. 23, after a rotation as the East Africa Response Force at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti.

The "Can Do" Soldiers, the battalion’s motto, of Company A, supported Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa, to protect U.S. interests through military engagement and provide military support to East African partner nations.

“It was very different from my previous deployment, but we still maintained a high level of readiness at any time,” said Capt. Reamer Argo, commander of Company A. “If we did need to go into any situation, we would be ready for it. There was a lot of time for the Soldiers to develop.”

Soldiers conducted desert survival training with their French partners and other branches of the U.S. military, as well as mortar, team-level and squad-level training to maintain unit readiness.

“Our favorite memory is working in the joint environment,” Argo said. “We worked a lot with the French and our sister services. We got a lot of good training over there.”

Some enlisted leaders instructed foreign training with their joint partners.

“I was an instructor at the French commando school,” said Staff Sgt. Joshua Matzdorf, an infantryman with Company A. “I got to live with the French for a month at a time.”

On arrival to Hunter Army Airfield, the Soldiers were ready to enjoy the comforts of home.

“I’m looking forward to some home-cooked meals, going to the beach ... the simple things,” said Spc. Michael Klaassen, an infantryman with Company A.

“I have three little kids,” Argo said. “It’s going from not being able to crawl, to when I see them they are going to be walking and talking.”

“You spend enough time in another country, you end up missing home,” Matzdorf said. “It’s nice to be back.”

The returning troops look forward to reconnecting with family and friends.

“We are about to do our reintegration over the next couple days and then have time to take leave,” Argo said.
