DESNA, Ukraine – Soldiers with Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine, a delegation from NATO Defense Education Enhancement Program, Canada and Lithuanian Land Forces conducted a meeting with the Sergeant Major of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Feb. 24. The gathering, held at the 197th Noncommissioned Officer Training Center in Desna, Ukraine, focused on building a plan for a noncommissioned officer development training course.
The three-day conference was held in order to establish the details of the course, which included a current assessment of Ukrainian noncommissioned officer professional development, professional military curriculum, multinational cooperation, advisory and logistical support to the 197th Training Center.
“I think the Ukrainian professional NCO development training process is a well thought out process to establish a professional noncommissioned officer corps to the Ukrainian Armed forces,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Sergio Porras, JMTG-U command sergeant major. “The approach that the Ukrainian ministry of defense has taken in asking NATO Defense Education Enhancement Program to lead the efforts speaks to the willingness to reform of the Ukrainian armed forces,” he added.
The three-week course will address the needs of military units of the Ukrainian army by creating qualified, professionally trained NCO instructors who will be able to train and lead soldiers of subordinate units.
“I am proud of this opportunity to assist the Ukrainian armed forces in the development of a professional noncommissioned officer corps,” said Porras.
JMTG-U assistance with Ukrainian NCO development is a part of larger efforts in reforming Ukrainian military doctrine and providing the continuity in support of California’s state partnership with Ukraine.
