SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. - The inaugural Gunnery Sgt. (Ret.) Gary “Gunny” Rucks Iron Man Award was recently presented to Robert Merrifield (center), SDDC G3 Traffic Management Specialist, during a ceremony at the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command headquarters.
“The Gunnery Sgt. (Ret.) Gary Rucks Iron Man award was created to recognize the G3 employee that exemplifies the characteristics that Gary Ruck displayed as a loyal and dedicated employee of SDDC,” said Vernita Anderson-Manning (right), G3 Supervisory Traffic Manager.
Rucks retired as a Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps after twenty years of service. He was a federal employee with SDDC when he passed away Aug. 21, 2015.
According to Anderson-Manning, Merrifield was selected for his many characteristics that Rucks displayed to include his “can-do” spirit and selfless service. Additionally, Merrifield performed the duties of two jobs, spending countless hours ensuring that we had no mission failures.
Merrifield coordinates budget requirements for Joint Chiefs of Staff and SDDC internal/external exercises. He also serves as technical adviser to the SDDC G3 and other SDDC Command Staff elements.
“It’s an honor to win this award, I’m shocked,” said Merrifield.
In addition, Anderson-Manning announced Tanya Garrett and Armando Castromontanez as the first and second runners-up, respectively.
The awards were presented by Donna (left) and Justin Rucks, the wife and son of the retired Marine.
