MIRAMAR, Calif. - Sgt. Maj. Richard Charron relinquished his duties as sergeant major of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar to Sgt. Maj. Michael Walton during a relief and appointment ceremony aboard MCAS Miramar, California, March 2.

The ceremony also marked the end of Charron’s 30 years of active service in the Marine Corps.

“It’s been a great 30-year career and I would do it all over again,” said Charron. “I’m having mixed feelings about leaving, but I know I’m not really leaving because once a Marine, always a Marine.”

Charron thanked the Marines, Sailors and civilians for making his job easy during his time at Miramar.

“These Marines, Sailors and civilians truly are some of the best professionals I have worked with,” said Charron. “Watching them make this miniature city run is just phenomenal;. I’ve always stood in awe of it.”

Walton is taking command after serving as the sergeant major of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 232 since November 2014. Charron said he is confident in Walton’s abilities.

“I think he is the perfect man for the job,” said Charron. “I believe he is going to do great things here and is exactly what the air station needs.”

Before leaving his role as station sergeant major, he had one more piece of advice for the Marines and Sailors of MCAS Miramar.

“Just keep marching forward,” said Charron. “Keep doing what you do every day and that is caring for the best air station in the Marine Corps.”
