COLUMBIA, S.C.— A new piece of artwork joins other beautiful pieces currently donning the halls of the Adjutant General’s Building. South Carolina Army National Guard Officers who recently graduated from the U.S. Army War College donated the painting, which was presented at Joint Force Headquarters, S.C. National Guard in Columbia, South Carolina, March 4, 2016.
Since 2004, it has been a tradition for classes of SCARNG Soldiers to purchase commissioned artwork to donate. The practice started with a familiar figure, U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Gregory Batts, the assistant adjutant general of the South Carolina National Guard.
“My class donated the painting because we wanted to show our appreciation,” said Batts. “It’s an incredible opportunity to be chosen to attend the War College.”
The paintings are originally commissioned by War College classes to be hung at the school and all share a common theme, leadership moments in history. “They are all a look at some defining moment for the United States Army,” said Col. Ronny Finley, chief of staff of the South Carolina National Guard.
The class of 2015 decided to donate a painting that related directly to their home state. The art is a representation of Operation Noble Eagle, a mission to maintain the National Capital Region Air Defense System. The South Carolina Army National Guard is one of five states with air defense units that rotate to contribute to the mission at the Joint Air Defense Operations Center. The 263rd Army Air Missile Defense Command and newly activated 678th Air Defense Artillery Brigade belong to the SCARNG.
“Each class wants to leave something behind in honor or their commitment to service. It’s our legacy,” said Batts. “We hope that future classes continue to embrace and support this tradition.”
