    Military Sealift Command Far East

    BUSAN, Republic of Korea – A senior official from the Republic of Korea (ROK) army visited the various commands at Pier 8 here March 8 for a tour of operations during elements of exercises Key Resolve, Foal Eagle and Freedom Banner.

    Gen. Jang, Jun Kyu, the chief of staff for ROK army visited Military Sealift Command Office Korea (MSCO-K), 837th Transportation Battalion, and the Combined Seaport Command Center (CSCC), which were heavy in the middle of conducting and supporting the various exercises.

    “We were honored to have the ROK army chief of staff visit the CSCC,” said U.S. Army Col. Anthony Aquino, 599th deputy commander for mobilization and U.S. co-chair for the CSCC. “He asked difficult but excellent questions and had the opportunity to see our combined staff, ROK army Port Operations Group (POG), MSCO-K and the Surface Deployment and Distribution Command work together.”

    After various command briefings, Jang visited the surge sealift, roll-on/roll-off ship USNS Maj. Stephen W. Pless (T-AK 3007), which was conducting an offload to support exercise Foal Eagle.

    “We’re simultaneously involved with Key Resolve, Foal Eagle and Freedom Banner. It was an opportunity to show him MSC’s role on the Korean peninsula during a contingency,” said Navy Cmdr. Eric J. St. Peter, commanding officer, MSCO-K. “He wanted to see how U.S. and Koreans were working together to build a strong alliance in defense of the Korean peninsula. The visited allowed for him to see for himself the strong alliance between the ROK Port Operations Group and MSCO-K.”

    According to ROK army Col. Park, Nam Soo, commander of ROK POG, Jang was the highest ranking and busiest officer in the ROK army.

    “He visited us because he knows very well how important the role the CSCC plays in the (Key Resolve) exercise,” said Park. “His visit is a symbol of the firm alliance between the ROK and U.S. forces.”

    MSC operates approximately 115 non-combatant, civilian-crewed ships that replenish U.S. Navy ships, conduct specialized missions, strategically preposition combat cargo at sea around the world and move military cargo and supplies used by deployed U.S. forces and coalition partners.
