BETHESDA, Md. – The United States Army Element bid farewell to one command sergeant major and welcomed another during a change of responsibility ceremony held in Walter Reed National Military Medical Center’s Memorial Auditorium on Naval Support Activity Bethesda, March 11.

Command Sgt. Maj. Gary Williams passed the unit colors to Command Sgt. Maj. Michelle Jones. The passing of colors signifies the transference of responsibility from the outgoing, to the incoming command sergeant major.

“As a good senior enlisted advisor, he knew everything that was going on in the entire unit, all the time. It amazed me,” said Col. Richard Lindsay, commander, U.S. Army Element. “What he has experienced he has passed on to all of us so his wisdom helps us execute things to a higher standard.”

Lindsay presided over the ceremony and described Williams as, “an outstanding senior enlisted advisor. He truly set the example to be compared with.”

During his remarks, Williams expressed gratitude for the assignment.

“I’m proud of what you have accomplished and am proud to have served you. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience for my battalion sergeant major assignment,” said Williams. “I believe that Soldiers in this unit are groomed to be professionals — Army professionals, and I applaud all of you.”

Jones thanked Williams and directly addressed her new unit.

“Your experience and knowledge of the organization speaks volumes. I appreciate your guidance and mentorship that has prepared me for the job,” said Jones. “To all the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Civilian, I’m excited to work with each and every one of you. You are the foundation of this organization and your well-being is of great importance.”

As her first official act as the senior enlisted advisor, Jones declared, “Command Sgt. Maj. Michelle L. Jones reporting for duty,” and assumed her position in front of the formation.

Williams has been selected to serve as the command sergeant major of Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, Texas.
