BAGHDAD -- Iraqi Army and Ministry of the Interior forces, in conjunction with Coalition Forces, captured 143 more suspected terrorists, including some foreign fighters on the second day of "Operation Squeeze Play."
Over the last 48 hours, a total of 428 suspects have been detained in the massive joint-combat operation, involving Iraqi Soldiers, Iraqi Police, Iraqi Special Police Commandos and Task Force Baghdad Soldiers.
The Iraqi and U.S. forces are focusing their efforts in the western Baghdad district of Abu Ghraib. Due to the geographic location, Abu Ghraib has been a trafficking area for former Ba"ath Party terrorists and the Zarqawi terrorist network between Baghdad and Fallujah.
"Overall, the town has been very receptive to the Soldiers," said Lt. Col. Clifford Kent, a Task Force Baghdad spokesperson.
"The Iraqi citizens have demonstrated this by the amount of help they're giving Soldiers, particularly Iraqi Security Forces, in telling them where terrorists are hiding. The Iraqi people want these terrorists gotten rid of and they're doing something about it."
In combat operations elsewhere in Baghdad, Iraqi Army Soldiers captured nine terror suspects, including three who were specifically targeted for involvement in terror activities, during early-morning raids May 24.
Iraqi Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division conducted a raid in central Baghdad and arrested a man specifically targeted for planning and conducting terrorist attacks in the area.
When the Soldiers took the man into custody, they also found $570,000 Iraqi dinar, $415 dollars in U.S. currency and six passports in his possession.
In another raid in central Baghdad, Iraqi Army Soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division apprehended four terror suspects in east Baghdad, including three men specifically tied to terrorist activities.
One of the three targeted men was the leader of a terror cell called the Secret Islamic Army. All four men were taken into custody for questioning.
In northwest Baghdad, Iraqi Army Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 1st Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division arrested two more terror suspects, including one known to be a financier of terror cells in another early-morning raid.
The financier is also thought to have facilitated roadside bomb attacks against Iraqi Police and Coalition Forces. Both men were taken into custody for questioning.
Later, Task Force Baghdad Soldiers in east Baghdad took down two more terror suspects, including a man specifically targeted for his links to multiple kidnappings and car bombings.
