United States Army Air Corps Capt. Jerry Yellin, from Fairfield, Iowa, enlisted on February 15, 1942, at the age of 18 as an aviation pilot.
He served in 7th Fighter Command, 15th Group, 78th Fighter Squadron. He flew a P-51 mustang during the battle of Iwo Jima. During WWII he made 19 flights over Japan and he flew the last combat mission of WWII on August 14, 1945.
