The Department of the Navy is actively engaging growth of Science Technology Engineering Mathematics education to meet the Navy and Marine Corps’ need to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
In accordance with the DoN’s mission, the Combat Center Library unveiled plans to implement STEM technology to be available for service members, patrons and students at the Combat Center Library, March 22, 2016.
“There’s a vision for the Combat Center Library to become more of a hands-on learning center,” said Pfc. Wesley Sweeney, volunteer, Combat Center Library. “We’re creating a [STEM lab] to generate interest in STEM fields in both the community and the Marine Corps.”
The library has implemented STEM tools including a 3-D printer, Little Bits (electronic circuits), and 3-D design software applications.
“You can create something you might find in a 3-D animated film, export your creation and 3-D print it,” Sweeney said. “It’s bridging the gap between the designer and the engineer.”
According to Jeff Fourier, branch head, Personal and Professional Development, the library will officially open the STEM lab to the community near the end of June.
