DOBREGEA, Romania -- U.S. Marines and sailors with Black Sea Rotational Force took part in an ongoing community service trip to construct a patio for the Casa Benjamin placement home, Romania, March, 26, 2016.
Operation Playtime Romania helps placement homes and orphanages in and around Constanta county by sending Marines to spend time with the children and construct special projects for the centers.
“We worked on erecting a patio to help facilitate some of their daily activities they do outside the placement home,” said 1st Lt. David Bunting, a combat engineer officer with Combat Logistics Battalion 6, in support of BSRF. “We used lumber obtained through fundraisers in the past along with tools we had on site to facilitate the construction.”
Since September, 2015, OPR has raised over $5,000 from its benefactors and t-shirt donations that covered the costs for last year’s Christmas presents for the boys, the cement flooring for their carpentry building, and numerous tools for them to use.
“We spent our weekend playing soccer with kids from a different culture. To me that’s important, especially for these young Marines,” said Cpl. Daniel Phipps, an antitank missileman with BSRF. “It influences the Marines and the children. You want to give more whether it’s your time or knowledge.”
“The Marines that participate in community relations are ready to expand their minds, horizons and accept new challenges here with a population that’s appreciative. We’re always doing something new with the orphans and the home centers,” said Bunting. “To do something beyond the mission I was sent here to do is a rewarding experience.”
