FORT BRAGG, NC – Another culinary competition arrived at the Spartan dining facility at Fort Bragg, N.C., where food service workers from the 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade showed off their skills Monday, March 21, 2016.
“This is National Nutrition Month,” Sgt. 1st Class Christendath Rampersad, the dining facility manager, said. “The goal is to Go for Green concept.”
Go for Green is the Army’s dining facility nutrition education program, which uses color codes to allow Soldiers to quickly identify healthy and nutritional meals.
The colors, green, amber, and red, allow Soldiers to identify foods to eat often, eat occasionally, and eat rarely, according to how the food is coded.
“This isn’t something we do just for National Nutrition Month,” Rampersad said. “This is something we do all the time.”
Soldiers from the 108th were adamantly working behind the closed doors of the kitchen preparing foods such as pesto glazed salmon, grilled chicken with compote and vegetable kabobs, with hopes of placing first in Monday’s competition.
Prior to the competition, the Spartan dining facility participated in three nutrition competitions since opening its doors in 2013. The facility took first place in 2013 and 2014, and then placed third in 2015.
“The goal is to win,” Sgt. 1st Class Arturo Arreola, the senior culinary management non-commissioned officer, said. “But the ultimate goal is to provide the Soldiers with the right information, to make good decisions, for quality healthy meals.”
Soldiers eating at the dining facility also had the opportunity to have their blood pressure checked by brigade medics.
The Soldiers of the 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade strive to remain technically and tactically fit and stand ready for any challenge.
